Though the golden age of music sampling is long gone, sample clearance still generates millions of dollars in revenue annually. After decades of litigation and navigating gray areas, the utilization of audio snippets from older sound recordings as loops or accents for new musical works has become a widely accepted practice. Sampling has generated renewed interest in and created new revenue streams for obscure and legacy artists. Many of these artists, however, have not received any compensation nor recognition. Here are examples of songs by Black women that have been sampled on hit songs over the decades.
